Prosoche is the Stoic practice of continuous self-attention.
Not meditation. Not calm. Not zoning out.
It means watching:
what you’re thinking
what you’re about to say
what you’re about to do
before it turns into reaction.
The Stoics treated attention as a gatekeeper.
If you control attention, you control judgment.
If judgment stays clean, action stays aligned.
This practice is most clearly emphasized by Epictetus, who taught that freedom begins with noticing impressions the moment they appear.
Prosoche is not passive awareness.
It’s active monitoring of the inner field.
